my yesterday's essay

There should be no entrance test for people who want to study at University

Why do people have to take exams to enter University? The essays they are writing
at entrance exams could be misjudged and this might be the only reason they are not
accepted. Moreover, what if someone is brilliant in mathematics but gets extremely
nervous during exams so he cannot do his best? Everybody must have an opportunity to
study at University without any entrance exam.

Firstly, as I have already mentioned, the entrance test is not the best way to check
person’s knowledge. Every human being might have a headache on the day of the exam
and therefore fail it.

Secondly, some people can cheat by writing a test with an iPhone in the pocket and get
better results than those who actually know more on the subject.

Thirdly, I believe that there cannot be any entrance tests for study programs that demand
student’s creativity. Why would someone who wants to be a journalist pass a test? Will
a test make one’s writing skills clear? That is a controversial question. Though some
people might claim that a test can show person’s language and grammar skills, I would
object that this is vitally important for someone who wants to become a journalist.
Nowadays we have computer programs that correct the text you type, however nothing
but a human is able to write a good article.

The arguments that are listed above let us see that an entrance exam is far from the ideal
form of testing prospective students’ knowledge. The only problem is: it might get worse
without it and I have an example from my own experience.

Since few years there are no more entrance exams in Russia. Everybody who pays the fee
can study at the university. What kinds of students are these people? Would you expect
them to be curious, hungry for knowledge and inventing? Unfortunately they are not. But
they do study at University. Because of this there are not enough places for students who
might be much more talented but haven’t got enough money to pay for their education.
Earlier they would enter a University because of an entrance exam. Now they have little
chance to do that.

Last but not the least, we also have to consider one important thing: if every mediocre
scholar who has never showed any interest in biology would like to become a doctor, will
he become a trustworthy doctor? I strongly doubt that.

All things considered, I think that University should only be accessible for those people
who are really passionate about learning and discovering. University is a place with a
special environment, a place where students can get inspired by other students and share
their ideas with each other. Otherwise it cannot be called ‘University’.
